Outline
Our educational philosophy
Global environmental problems are inextricably linked with not only natural
science related issues but also population problems, regional or ethnic
conflicts, poverty, health and sanitation, and the deterioration of the
ecological system. In order to solve these intricately related problems,
one needs a deep understanding and recognition of culture and its environmental,
economic, political and social backgrounds. Based on this understanding,
the EDL program aims to achieve three objectives: (1) to foster originality
and problem solving skills that have the capacity for international mediations;
(2) to deal with environmental governance that encourages the active participation
of various stakeholders; and (3) to educate those who have knowledge about
sciences and technologies that are related to the environment, environmental
policies, ethics, legal systems, international relations, comparative culture,
and other issues.
What can you do with your EDL certificate?
What can you do with your EDL certificate? After completing the EDL program,
in addition to your specialized area of knowledge, you will have acquired
an advanced level of original thinking, problem-solving and negotiation
skills. You will be prepared to contribute to the development of environmental
policies in various areas of industry, business, the professions, and public
administration. As recognized leaders in environmental diplomacy, you will
have access to receive the latest information through the unique channel
of the Tsukuba Environmental Diplomatic Leaders International Consortium
(TEDLIC). You may also engage in environmental problem mitigation efforts
through international research collaboration between TEDLIC and its partner
institutions. The establishment of this post-graduation network is an essential
component of the EDL program's "Tsukuba model."
Program structure and student support
The EDL program is administered by a steering committee, formed under
the President of the University of Tsukuba. Its curriculum is organized
to foster administration and negotiation skills through a collaboration with
teaching and research staff at various institutions in Tsukuba Science
City. As part of its effort to create an international educational environment,
and enhanced by Tsukuba's practicum and internship courses in Japan and
overseas, the EDL program provides financial support through the use of
already established financial aid programs for travel and living expenses.
In addition, students will complete the entire process from application
to graduation in English.
About our logo
This EDL logo is derived from an image of paulownia flowers and leaves
that constitute the school emblem of the University of Tsukuba. The paulownia
is spread all over the globe, which symbolizes the Earth, meaning that the EDL program
at Tsukuba produces leaders who can help solve environmental problems worldwide.
The gradation of the four colors on the globe implies forests, rivers,
and seas that are interconnected as the natural environment.
