Doctoral Courses 【3 years】
In the doctoral program, a candidate will have advisory and evaluation
committees to assist in the choice of a dissertation topic related to one
or more environmental issues of the candidate's home country or region.
As part of the doctoral research, international practicum courses provide
the opportunity to engage in practical skill-oriented activities such as
the application of environmental technologies, data collection, and factual
investigation or monitoring. International internship courses offer experience
in actual project operations at international institutions and international
treaty secretariats so that the candidate can accumulate further skills
and experience in international negotiations. For these courses, the candidate
may also establish research and work-related collaboration with the home
institution. In this case, research activity and administrative assistance
that benefit the candidate’s skill improvement may be granted credit towards
the Tsukuba EDL credential.
The candidate is also expected to take courses to further advance practical
English communication and debating skills as well as to acquire functional
policy-making expertise. These courses will establish the foundation upon
which to apply advanced knowledge from the environmental sciences and technologies
to the policy formulation process. Of particular importance to this process
is the ability to effectively negotiate and develop consensus among all
parties directly or indirectly affected by policy enforcement. At the core
of the doctoral program is the expectation that Tsukuba graduates will
take their place among the senior leadership of environmental diplomacy;
in particular, that they will lead significant negotiating and consensus-making
efforts, internationally and in their home countries, resulting in solutions
to outstanding problems and issues of the environment.
